The Stops

Loading the ride…

West Virginia Bikers publishes routes as a guide, not a guarantee. Roads change, conditions change, and GPX data can be wrong — check the weather, judge the surface for yourself, and ride your own ride. Road conditions, closures, traffic and wildlife are yours to assess on the day. Riding a motorcycle carries inherent risk. We do not verify or warrant the accuracy of any route, map or GPX file, and you ride at your own risk.

A hundred and sixty-three miles that spend more time in Virginia than in West Virginia, and that is the point. The loop leaves White Sulphur Springs, climbs south past Sweet Springs, and crosses the state line into Paint Bank before most riders have settled into the seat.

From there it runs the Catawba Valley through New Castle and Catawba to the Hanging Rock Tavern, the turn that gives the ride its name. The road back west runs past Blacksburg and drops to the New River at Pearisburg, then follows it down to Narrows. Peterstown puts you back in West Virginia at mile one hundred and thirteen.

The last fifty miles are Monroe County, and they are the quietest of the day. Indian Creek Covered Bridge sits a tenth of a mile off the road and Laurel Creek is close behind it, with Hokes Mill coming up outside Ronceverte. Union, then Lewisburg, then home.

Plan a full day. A hundred and sixty-three miles of two-lane adds up, and the Virginia middle is not a stretch you want to rush.
